This is the story of a girl with two left feet.20 years ago if there was a setting with loud music and dancing,I would be the girl standing in a corner happily tapping her feet to the beats but would resist any attempt get onto the dance floor. It was easier to get a kid to eat her broccoli and peas than get a move out of me.I was stiff as a stick. No pun intended.
Recently, a close friend of mine from graduate school moved to town.I took her to an outing with my local friends. They were curious about how I was back then, looking for juicy tid-bits from my college days. With great amusement she narrated stories of my romance with my present day ex-husband. Their jaws dropped with disbelief when she told them that I had 2 left feet and how hard she had to work to teach me few steps for a mandatory performance.
They wondered how could that possibly be true about their dancing queen aka me! The one who is ready to jump onto dance floor at the drop of a hat.Now how did this transformation happen?
Credit goes to my ex-husband who’s an amazing dancer and loved parties.I picked up a bit of rhythm trying to match his steps, embracing what he enjoyed .Over the years I was able to connect to the beats. The real dancer was unleashed after the divorce that left me broken and with a lot of emotional baggage.
The dance in me came out as a means of self-expression.It helped me release the pent-up energies.I found joy and comfort in dance. This year I surprised myself by switching the choreography of a dance performance.Who knew I could do it :). To top it off, I prepared a 2 min dance sequence in less than 24 hours and not to mention ,it was well received by the audience. I made myself proud.
20 years ago I wouldn’t have imagined I could dance ,let alone do it so well !
I dance to my heart’s content and dance like no one is watching. That’s the key. Don’t be self-conscious ,try new things, people are so caught up in their own lives, no one cares what you are doing.
What is the point of this story ?
Push your limits. Embrace the change.
You don’t know what you are capable of.
Don’t let the dance in you die unexplored and unexposed. Let your light shine through.
“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.”
Think about what special skill or hidden talent in you needs honing? Change your story.Love yourself. 2 left feet will become right one day .
It’s never too late and tomorrow is today!
